Birmingham Public Library 2018 Summer Reading List

2018 Birmingham Public Library Summer Learning, over 400 free activities for kids, teens and adults being held at 19 locations across the City of Birmingham in June and July 2018. Details: Summer Learning puts an emphasis on learning through reading to prevent the dreaded "summer slide," a term referring to learning loss that occurs when students are on summer break. Make plans to attend the 2018 BPL Summer Learning Kickoff Party at the Central Library, 2100 Park Place, at 6:30-8 p.m. on Friday, June 1, 2018. Children’s programs include magicians, clowns, dance lessons, movies, and games   

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Looking for fun, free summer activities for your little ones? Then make plans to participate in the 2018 Birmingham Public Library (BPL)’s Summer Learning programs for kids. 

The Central Library downtown will host a 2018 BPL Summer Learning Kickoff Party at 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 1, 2018. Registration is under way now and you can print out a downloadable calendar of programs for kids at this link:    http://www.bplonline.org/summerreading.aspx 

As a new member of the Urban Libraries Council, BPL is joining others in transitioning from the traditional Summer Reading program to a Summer Learning program, with an emphasis on preventing "summer slide," a term referring to learning loss that occurs when students are on summer break. 

Here is a listing of select kids Summer Learning programs taking place in June and July.   

Arch Duncan, Magician – Fun magic show for all ages 10 a.m. June 12 at Five Points Wet Library, 10 a.m. July 2 at Powderly Library, 11 a.m.  July 12 at West End Library. 

Get Down with the Clown, 10 a.m. June 7 at East Ensley Library – Lilly Pad, our favorite clown from Children’s Hospital, does magic tricks, tells jokes, sings and juggles. She also walks on stilts and rides a unicycle.   

Soft Rock Catapult, 10 a.m. June 26 at Central Library Arrington Auditorium – Send marshmallows flying through the air using popsicle sticks and rubber bands. 

Rock ‘N’ Show,  Avondale Library, 6:30 p.m. June 26- Avondale’s 15th annual talent show showcases some of the most talented children in Birmingham. Register as a performer or member of the audience in advance 24 hours in advance.

Family Fun Night: Meet the Music, June 11, 6 p.m. Local musicians show off their instruments and play some awesome tunes for families of all ages. 

Firefighter Show and Tell, June 27 at 10 a.m. Meet heroes from the Birmingham Fire Department. 

Turkey Mountain Nature Preserve: Local Meet and Greet, June 29 at 4 p.m. – Alabama is home to some of the most diverse reptiles and amphibians in the world. See some of these fascinating animals up close and hear the important role they play. Register by calling 205-226-4085.

 Birmingham Academy of Martial Arts Karate Demonstration, July 18 at 10 a.m. – Learn how to break a board and perfect those high kicks. 

Athletes Who Rock: Tragic City Rollers, July 20 at 4 p.m. – Meet ladies from Birmingham’s premier roller derby team as they share information about the sport and give a live demonstration.
