NATIONAL BURN AWARENESS WEEK RESOLUTION

Council President Pro Tem Crystal Smitherman brought forth a resolution in support of National Burn Awareness Week.

Each year in the United States, 1.1 million burn injuries require medical attention. Approximately 50,000 of these require hospitalization; 20,000 have major burns involving at least 25 percent of their total body surface, and approximately 4,500 of these people die. This awareness campaign is aimed at reducing the number of accidents that can cause bodily harm and require hospitalization.

“UAB is the only level one trauma center in the state of Alabama,” Smitherman explained. “They treat the majority of the burn injuries that we have in our state as well as in neighboring states. The importance of this awareness campaign is aimed at prevention and to reduce the number of burn victims that are admitted every year. We are proud to partner with them and get this message out there.”

Allie Hulcher, Communications Specialist, Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, UAB Department of Surgery brought this item before the Council. On behalf of the entire Birmingham City Council we’d like to say how grateful we are for our ongoing partnerships with our local healthcare providers at UAB and the other hospital systems in our city. Stay safe, Birmingham.
