Volunteers Needed! Saturday, October 20th in 5 Points South

Clean and Clear is Five Points South's beautification and cleanup event that happens three times a year. From trash collection to graffiti removal and greenery efforts, this is your day to give back in Five Points South.

Clean and Clear is a Five Points Alliance program and only made possible through our sponsors and partners and the City of Birmingham. 

WHEN: Saturday, October 20, 2018 8am-1:30pm

  • 8am-8:30am: Check-in @ 1631 15th Ave South

  • 8:30am-11:30am: Shift - 3 hours

  • 12pm-1:30pm: Lunch

  • [NOTE: rain date is Sat. Oct. 27th]

WHERE: Check-in at 8am at 1631 15th Ave South with group orientation at 8:30am. Five Points South business district and many areas within the neighborhood are targeted for Clean and Clear efforts.

WHAT: At check-in, you’ll receive your assigned cleaning area, complimentary coffee, water and snacks. All we need you to bring is the manpower and some tools. IMPORTANT!!!!

TARGET AREA: Anderson Place Historic District

  • Litter pick-up within and around district

  • Sidewalk clearing and weed cutting along district (mowers & edgers)

  • Tree Trimming along sidewalks

  • Install new street sign toppers

  • Cut vacant lots

WHO: Anyone! From large companies to individuals, families with young children to college students, we’ll find a place and tasks for everyone. Sign up as an individual or gather a team.

WHY CLEAN & CLEAR: Since March 2017, [166 volunteers] totaling [543 hours] have made Clean and Clear Five Points South a huge success. And we know that beautification efforts like Clean and Clear create a higher quality of life by attracting visitors, residents, reducing crime, encouraging new businesses and instilling pride in the city we all call home.

RESULTS TO DATE:

  • [7,152 pounds] of trash and debris have been collected;

  • [4,837 feet] of sidewalks/alleys have been cleaned/cleared

  • [$13,097.16] value of volunteer time

  • Problems with city infrastructure like vandalism, potholes and damaged bus stops have been reported.

2017/2018 special projects included alleyways and sidewalks within the fountain area business district cleanups, an alleyway clean up on Cobb Lane, a community park clean up at Valley View Park and clearing the sidewalk on 16th Ave South.
