Councilor Hunter Williams meets with Senator Shelby, presents resolution honoring his years in public service

Press Release

December 7th, 2022

Today, Councilor Hunter Williams, who chairs the Council's Economic Development and Tourism Committee, met with U.S. Senator Richard Shelby to present him with a resolution that the Birmingham City Council passed in November honoring his storied career and legacy. Senator Shelby has represented the people of Alabama since he was first elected in 1986.

Throughout his time in office, Senator Shelby created appropriations that have had a tremendous impact on the economic development of Birmingham and Central Alabama.

Most recently, Senator Shelby has served as Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. In 2021, Senator Shelby announced he would not be seeking reelection and is now being succeeded by his former Chief of Staff, Katie Britt, who was recently elected to the seat.

Councilor Williams was joined by U.S. Congresswoman Terri Sewell to present the resolution and discuss bipartisan efforts to secure upcoming legislation that will benefit Alabama residents – such as the omnibus bill that Congress is currently negotiating.

“It’s hard to imagine what Birmingham would look like today without Senator Shelby’s vision with regards to major economic development opportunities for the state of Alabama,” Councilor Williams said. “Today’s conversation with Senator Shelby and Congresswoman Sewell proves that bipartisanship is not only possible, but a necessary function of our democracy. Alabama residents want to see results and that requires both sides of the aisle working together, and today I was encouraged by what we were able to accomplish on that front.”

Anyone across the state with an idea for solving a workforce problem facing their community is encouraged to apply. The Builders + Backers Idea Accelerator Program powered by Heartland Forward is designed to make it easy for anyone to experiment with entrepreneurship. This new cohort of builders is part of Heartland Forward’s commitment to supporting 1,000 builders across the heartland by 2023.

“Entrepreneurship is seeing a problem that exists and experimenting with a solution to address it,” said Donna Harris, CEO of Builders + Backers. "Millions of Americans see problems and solutions everyday while driving our kids to school, shopping online or waiting on hold to speak to a doctor. And we say, 'someone should fix this or build that.' Unfortunately, that's where millions of ideas end. We're excited to partner with Heartland Forward and Walmart to help get these ideas in Alabama from concept to action."

“Walmart is thrilled to partner with Heartland Forward and Builders + Backers to launch the workforce ideas accelerator,” said Sean Thurman, Senior Director of Global Public Policy at Walmart. “With approximately 1.7 million associates in the United States (more than 40,000 of which are employed in Alabama), we’re committed to strengthening training and education for our workforce, and working with others to improve career mobility across the retail sector and beyond – for example, improving learning systems for working adults and ensuring greater recognition of skills acquired through alternative learning models. With 90 percent of Americans living within ten miles of a Walmart store, we know how important it is to work with communities to address shared challenges. We look forward to seeing what creative ideas come out of this cohort.”

“Builders + Backers Idea Accelerator and the partnerships with Walmart and Heartland Forward will allow our local business owners to expand their business ideas.  Thus, growing the economy and expanding the workforce in the Mobile community.  The City of Mobile’s Office of Supplier Diversity is elated for the partnership and the opportunities that they bring to our current future business owners,” said Archnique Kidd, Supplier Diversity Manager City of Mobile.

“We understand that the needs of our workforce are diverse and complex, and programs like this help us uncover robust solutions and entrepreneurs simultaneously, “said Sarah McMillan, Manager of Workforce and Talent Development.

At the heart of the program are the four pillars, designed to mobilize and equip Builders through:

  • Idea Accelerator: This cohort-based program combines a 45-day Builder Bootcamp to teach participants how to put ideas into action, followed by 45 days of actively executing their ideas through a single experiment.

  • Pebble Fund: All of the Builders are supported by a $5,000 Pebble Grant to test their ideas. Participants are mentored by Master Builders throughout the program.

  • Storytelling: A comprehensive media program that curates, captures and distributes stories of Buildership™, both from within the programs and in communities everywhere. Through video, written stories, social media and media partnerships, the program inspires people to become Builders.

  • Buildership Workshops: Workshops and other events introduce people to the ideas of Buildership™ and demonstrate that anyone can generate creative solutions through entrepreneurial experimentation that contribute to the sustainability of communities.

BEST Halloween Story - Lily's Accessible Pumpkin Patch - Lakeshore Foundation

What:  The Rolling Pumpkin Patch

Where:  2900 Tera Lane, Bessemer, 35203

When:  Saturday, October 22, 2022, from 10am-4pm

Info:  Lakeshore youth member Lily Dobson and her family have big plans for Halloween season. Ten year old Lilly, with the help of her parents, and staff from Lakeshore Foundation are creating an accessible pumpkin patch for a Halloween party. It’s called The Rolling Pumpkin Patch and Lily has invited more than 200 of her friends, especially her friends who use walkers or wheelchairs. There will be accessible pumpkin hunting, petting zoo, hayrides, face painting treats and fun picture opportunities.

Background Story on Lily:

If you are looking for Lakeshore youth member Lily Dobson, she might be swimming at the pool, her second favorite activity next to wheelchair basketball. Dobson plays basketball and is on the swim team at Lakeshore. Getting to this point has been a long journey for the whole family.

In 2012, two years after the earthquake in Haiti, Lily was born with arthrogryposis, a congenital condition affecting joint movement. Little did anyone know that wheels were already in motion to bring Lily to a new home in Birmingham, Alabama.  “We wanted to grow our family and we prayed about it,” said Jennifer Dobson, Lily’s mother. “It was a 7-year adoption process, we took 6 trips to Haiti and on our 7th, we brought Lily home when she was 3 ½. “

As Lily settled into her new home, she also visited Lakeshore Foundation. “Lily fell in love as soon as she walked in the door,” Jennifer said.  “Swimming and exercise classes were Lily’s first activities before being invited to play basketball. Her first year was a learning experience, but in season two she scored her first points and showed her competitiveness. While basketball is great, it’s also helped in other ways. One day she was struggling with schoolwork and her coach, Lauren Perry, had her do homework during practice. I will ever be thankful to coach Lauren for that,” Jennifer added.

Lily’s teammates and coaches have meant the world while playing her dream sport. Look for #10 at a gym near you. Lily will be wearing bright pink socks. “I like to stand out,” Lily says.

Interviews are available both before the event as setup work gets underway, and during the event.
