PEP hosting several workshops this month  

  • The Department of Planning, Engineering and Permits (PEP) is hosting three workshops this month that will cover several topics related to permitting and inspections within the City of Birmingham. All the events are free and open to the public.  

    • Session A: The first session, which will take place at the CrossPlex on Thursday, Sept. 7 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., will cover topics such as zoning requirements, pre-permitting meetings, and a new online permit guide for the city.   

    • Session B: The second session, which will take place at the CrossPlex on Wednesday, Sept. 13 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., will cover the permitting process from A to Z as well as a discussion around contractor education and ensuring citizens have the correct information when selecting a contractor. 

    • Session C: The final session, which will take place at the CrossPlex on Thursday, Sept. 21 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., will cover the inspections and enforcement aspects related to permitted and unpermitted work within the city.  

 

Negro Southern League Museum to honor women of the league

  • The Negro Southern League Museum will unveil their new exhibit, “Salute to Women of the Negro League” this Sunday, Sept. 10 at 2:30 p.m. Go to birminghamnslm.org for details. 

Join the city for the 2023 Forging Justice Commemoration Week 

  • All year long, the City of Birmingham – with leadership from our Division of Social Justice and Racial Equity -- has joined with community partners to reflect and remember the 60th commemoration of the heroic events of the Birmingham Civil and Human Rights Movement. During the week of September 10-16, the community is invited to a week of event that will bring about education, healing, and progress. Register for the 2nd Annual Women in Leadership Conference

  • The Birmingham Police Department is excited to announce the 2nd Annual Women in Leadership Conference.   • September is the month we reflect upon the Four Little Girls who lost their lives in the 16th Street Church bombing. September's poster is themed “We Remember" and features an artistic collage of Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley.   • In celebration of Black History Month, the Human Resources Department will present the WebEx panel discussion The Uncomfortable Conversation: How far have we come and where are we headed? Judge Andra Sparks will moderate an open dialogue on the current forward movement and the continued challenges of Birmingham. Panelists include retired Federal Judge U.W. Clemon, The Surge Project Executive Director Te’Andria Ellis, BCRI President and CEO DeJuana Thompson and COB IEO Director Cornell Wesley.

SJRE hosts a Black History Month panel discussion 

  • In celebration of Black History Month join the Division of Social Justice & Racial Equity for a panel discussion on “The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story.” The panel will feature former Birmingham Mayor Dr. Richard Arrington, Jr.; founding Birmingham Civil Rights Institute President Odessa Woolfolk; Community Organizer Chad Freeman; and moderated by Gina Mallisham, Director, Jefferson County Memorial Project. Majella Chube Hamilton with The Ballard House will provide an overview.

Sign up for the MLK Day 5K Drum Run  

Some free entry forms available! 

  • The MLK Day 5K Drum Run is a fun and active event to celebrate the MLK Day holiday weekend. Since its 2012 inception in Atlanta, GA, the race has grown to over 2,000 runners/walkers and featured over 200 drummers from metro area schools and groups. The City of Birmingham and the Mayor’s Office is an INSPIRE partner for the 2023 MLK 5K Drum Run ‘TEAM COB’ and has comp forms for seven 5K entries and seven 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk entries. Call Spoken Word artists! 

  • The City of Birmingham presents its Servant Leader Spoken Word Contest. Submit your spoken word recording of a previously authored or original piece to employeerelations@birminghamal.gov. BFRS shares their emergency incident totals for 2022 

  • Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded to 73,007 emergency incidents in 2022. Last year was the busiest in the history of BFRS, which included the following: 

    • 200 emergency incidents per day. 

    • 1,404 emergency incidents per week. 

    • 6,084 emergency incidents per month.

    • Come enjoy a block party featuring the grand opening of Crab Barrack. City and County employees receive a 10 percent discount on CrossPlex village eateries (except for Starbucks). See attached.

  • Employee Appreciation Day  

    • Birmingham-Southern College will have a City of Birmingham Employee Appreciation Day during its 6 p.m. game on Saturday, Oct. 1 on its campus. What this means is that City of Birmingham employees who show their ID badge at any gate, will receive free entrance. All employees attending the game will also be entered in a drawing. **There is limited parking around the stadium, so fans will most likely need to park in the parking lot by the college's soccer fields and walk down the hill to the stadium.
