Council Census Committee
The 2020 Census is right around the corner and your Birmingham City Council has been working to make sure all residents have the resources and knowledge to participate. Having an accurate population count will help dictated future City Council redistricting, federal funding and statewide Congressional apportionment.
Micromobility Ordinance
Increasing access to transportation has been a major focus of the Birmingham City Council. Over the last few years, the Transportation Committee has been working with local stakeholders and rideshare companies in an effort to ensure these services are safe and fair for residents. The Council is working on an ordinance that would open the door for micromobility companies to operate in Birmingham
LED Streetlight Improvements
Birmingham is a little brighter than it was a few years ago. In partnership with the City, Alabama Power has completed an upgrade to the 30,000 streetlights across all nine districts.
In January, the Public Improvements Committee received an update on the LED light replacement and discussed the next steps to add more lighting across all nine districts.
Body Camera Upgrades For Police
The Birmingham Police Department will soon be deploying a new generation of body cameras following an agreement approved by the City Council on January 16. The new cameras will be purchased using federal grant money. Councilor Hunter Williams, chair of the Public Safety Committee, said the upgrades are in line with efforts to take a more "data-driven" approach to law enforcement in Birmingham.
Councilor Woods Partnering To Bring High-Speed Rail Conference To Birmingham
A conference to discuss the feasibility of connecting Birmingham to the I-20 eXpress high-speed rail line will take place in March. Councilor Clinton Woods is partnering with the planning and development firm, the Finley Group, in order to educate the public on the topic and how Birmingham could benefit from the project.

2020 U.S. Census : Birmingham Companies asked to encourage participation
The Birmingham Business Alliance is asking its investors and the business community to encourage participation in the 2020 Census among employees. The BBA will be sharing materials frequently about the 2020 Census, which may only take a few minutes to complete, but the impact from Alabamians’ participation will be felt for the next decade and beyond. City Council Meeting Recap-January 28th, 2020
Here are the main items the Birmingham City Council passed at the January 28th, 2020 Meeting:
Item 10
A resolution was approved authorizing the Mayor to expend funds for up to 3 neighborhood representatives from each of Birmingham’s 99 neighborhoods to attend the Neighborhood USA (NUSA) Conference in Little Rock, Arkansas from May 20-23, 2020.
Items 29-34
The Council voted to reschedule a public hearing for the rezoning of six properties located around the former Carraway Hospital campus. The public hearing will be held during the regularly scheduled City Council Meeting on February 25.
Item 38 and 43 (addendum items)
Two resolutions were approved on Tuesday by the Birmingham City Council related to potentially hosting several major sporting events -- the World Police and Fire Games as well as the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament.
The Council approved a resolution that will allow the City to potentially submit a bid to host the 2025 World Police and Fire Games, an Olympic-style sporting event for roughly 10,000 active and retired police and fire personnel. There will be over 70 countries that are represented and teams will compete in over 60 sporting events. Past host countries include China, Spain, Australia, Sweden, and Northern Ireland.
The item dealing with the NCAA tournament was a resolution of intent to provide funding for the event beginning in 2023 and to open the bid process. Birmingham has hosted the NCAA Tournament on 10 different occasions, the last being early-round games in 2008.
